Mission Trip: Asheville, North Carolina / May 30-June 4

I went on a mission trip with my church youth group to North Carolina where we stayed at the YMCA for the week. Black Mountain has always been one of my favorite places in America; The mountains and wild life is such a breath taking display of God's creation! In our free time, we sat in the creek and went on small hikes, and I don't think I've ever seen anywhere as peaceful and beautiful as the camp.

We had a pool party at the YMCA, went white water rafting on the Ocoee River, and hiking. We attended a Tourist's baseball game and the Asheville Drum Circle after volunteering. My cabin roommate/ best friend and I freaked out over spider crickets and researched them the whole week (our cabin had many creatures).A friend and I had a mini jam session in the girls' cabin, and there was a lip sync battle and wonderful worship time with devotions and studies. The main point of the studies was "purpose." I will do a more detailed blog post on this topic.

Though there was a lot of goofing around and hanging out, we also worked hard. We volunteered at Manna Food bank bagging cucumbers and making food drive boxes. I was surprised to discover that a large percentage of Americans are hungry (20%) alongside the large percentage of food that is wasted (40%). I already try to not waste food, but those statistics reminded me to be more mindful of my behavior. That Friday, we went to an orphanage where they were opening a veterans home. We laid mulch and wood chips, set up tables and chairs, and put up tents, flags, and games.

The whole trip was an incredible experience-as it is every year. I can honestly say that I have never been unhappy on one of these trips. They're fun, humbling, and renewing!
